If a miracle youth elixir really exists, it’s water. Drinking water flushes away the toxins that age us. It hydrates our skin, supports all of the bodies systems that are responsible for cellular renewal, and it aids the body in getting rid of excess fat. One good rule of thumb to figure out how much water you should personally be drinking, is to drink half your body weight in ounces. So a 150 lb individual would aim to drink 75 ounces of water in a day. If you struggle to get your daily water allotment, here are 5 tips to help you.
1.) Buy a water bottle with ounce marks on it and carry it with you everywhere. I use a 32 oz nalgene water bottle and my goal is to drink two of them a day. If it’s 3:00 and I’m only 8 oz down I get guzzling.
2.) If you feel hungry, drink some water instead of eating. Often times when we walk around persistently dehydrated our bodies start to send false hunger signals instead of thirst signals knowing that the food we choose might have a high water content.
3.) Learn to love it. If you don’t enjoy drinking water, try investing in a good filter for your tap or buying a good brand of alkaline water. It may be that the water you usually drink just doesn’t taste good to you.
4.) Infuse it. At the spa I work at we have a pretty glass pitcher of water with cucumber and lemon slices floating in it and our clients can’t get enough of it. The slight flavor imparted is just enough to make drinking water feel like a luxury. Try adding mint, cucumbers, lemons, or berries to your water to make it more exciting.
5.) Sip a few ounces of water after every time you use the restroom. This will keep you hydrated all day instead of water bingeing when you realize that you are really beyond thirsty. It also serves as an associative reminder to keep hydrated. Water out, water in.
If you can manage to up your water intake by following these guidelines, don’t be surprised if you find your energy levels increasing and your skin looking more radiant. Water is key to health, and health is beauty.
