Food Nutrition Facts for Better Health

Whatever you read about food nutrition facts please, please, please take it all with a grain of salt (even if you are on a salt free diet!)

What I mean by this is that the science of nutrition is in its infancy. One day they come out and say that one thing is definitely right and then a few years later they tell us that no that wasn't quite right but now this is! I have seen this a number of times in my life time.

So whatever you are told or currently believe about nutrition please take it in the light of the bigger picture. Don't get too stuck on incidentals.

Good nutrition is essential to life. People have died from malnutrition. Before Captain Cook and his Botanist Joseph Banks on the good ship 'Endeavour' insisted that the crew be given vegetables and limes, it was not uncommon for one third of the crew to die from scurvy on a long ocean voyage. No one died on the Endeavour!

This proves that good nutrition is essential for human life but just what is good nutrition and how good does it need to be? How can we find out what foods our bodies need?

Modern day science can help us to a large degree but it is not infallible. Trial and error and watching the results over time is another way. Looking at National diets is also interesting (e.g. Hunza, French, Japanese). People eat differently in different countries and have different levels of health. There are also different styles of eating such as vegetarian, vegan and raw food diets.

I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way for the average person to obtain sufficient nutrition is as follows :

- Eat a wide variety of foods

- Choose foods that are as close to their natural state as reasonably possible. Generally speaking, the less human intervention the better.

- Drink lots of water

- Have a good dose of fiber

If you follow the above, the average human body will have enough nutrition to get by. But if you want to do more than just get by then choose foods that give you heaps of energy.
