Fun Exercises
What would you rather do, boring exercise or fun exercises? It is so much easier to be motivated to get up and exercise if you are going to do something that you enjoy.I remember my Dad telling me of his time in air force training. Every day they had to do basic calisthenics until he was bored stupid. Eventually he was able to talk his sergeant into letting them box for exercise. It worked well. They all got a good workout and their reflexes sharpened. There is nothing boring about boxing, you have to be totally focused every second, not knowing where the next punch is coming from. There are all sorts of sports (chess excepted) and activities that can give you a great workout and be enjoyed. You don't have to go to the gym (unless of course you enjoy the gym in which case go for it). But if you find yourself doing boring exercises then try and do it with friends. You can still have a bit of a laugh and help to motivate each other. Exercising to music is another way to make plain exercise more fun. Another good help is variety. Don't just do the same dull routine day in day out (it might not be dull to start with but give it time and it will be). "Variety is the spice of life" as they say in the classics so apply this to your exercise program. Swim one day, jog the next etc. You can even make seasonal adjustments e.g. ice skating in the winter is normally more enjoyable than swimming (under the ice!). It's really up to each and every one of us to try a few different things to see what we like. Some activities you could try are: - Golf - Gardening (work to some but pleasure to others) - Hiking or Bush Walking - Skating - Cycling - Boxing - Martial Arts - Surfing (better than swimming laps) And then there is dancing. What about dance exercise? Dancing is one of those real feel good activities. It's good exercise and it's good socially. My mother in law, while in her 70's, used to go Line Dancing for two or three hours at a time. She was as fit as a fiddle and she loved it! There are plenty of dance studios around these days where you can go and learn or there are video lessons available to get you started if you don't want to look too clumsy on your first day. Fun exercises are the way to go.
