I promised you a recipe for a magical delicious chai latte that can cure what ails you, but to convince you of the truth of my claim, I first have to help you to understand that behind every disease lies inflammation.
As a kid I suffered from a host of different kid-common issues like asthma, eczema, and allergies both to foods and to environmental elements. As an adult I came to learn that my health issues which hadn’t gone away, were actually just different manifestations of systemic inflammation. But it doesn’t stop there because this isn’t just my story. It turns out that behind all disease, there is first an inflammatory response. If I hadn’t educated myself and made changes to my diet and lifestyle I probably would have gone on in later years to develop arthritis, heart disease, and dementia as well.
What is inflammation?
In the simplest of terms inflammation is our body’s natural healing response. The inflammation problem crops up when we begin to experience systemic inflammation. It’s as though our body has been put on high alert and is attempting to protect us from everything. Even things that don’t hurt us. The body has many ways of responding to different supposed threats and each different response will look like a different disease. The following is a list I pulled from an article on mercola.com of some of the most common diseases that are caused by inflammation.
Allergies, Alzheimer’s, anemia, asthma, autism, arthritis, celiac, crohn’s disease, congestive heart failure, eczema, fibromyalgia, fibrosis, gall bladder disease, heart attack, kidney failure, lupus, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, scleroderma, and stroke.
Even most healthy people who don’t experience these issues probably have inflammation problems that act out in more subtle ways like lethargy, PMS, headaches, or muscle pain.
Our diet plays a huge role in our bodies inflammatory response and fortunately there are many delicious anti-inflammatory foods that when ingested regularly can make dramatic improvements in our health. One of my favorites is turmeric. Turmeric is super hip right now in healthy foodie blogosphere so if you want to learn all about how amazing it is just search it on Google or Pinterest.
And that brings me to sharing with you the recipe for my Magical anti-inflammatory Caffeine Free Chai Latte To Cure All Disease. But that’s a long name so I’m going to stick with it’s more common name “Golden Milk” This is my version.
Two mugs worth of homemade almond milk. (this is super simple. just Google it)
1-1/2 inch nub of fresh tumeric root
1 inch nub of ginger root
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp powdered tumeric
a few shakes of black pepper
a tiny tiny dash of cayenne
raw unfiltered honey to taste or stevia if you’re avoiding sugar
(note about honey: while raw unfiltered enzyme rich honey is topically anti-inflammatory and certainly the enzymes it contains are anti-inflammatory, the sugar in it is pro-inflammatory. If you’re really trying to reduce your inflammation response, less is better)
Blend everything but the honey (if using) in a nutribullet, blender, or your food pulverization appliance of choice. Blend it until the color starts to show up and there are no chunks of anything.
Heat gently on the stove stirring every few seconds. Don’t let the milk boil. Once the concoction is really hot it should have developed a deeply golden color. Now take it off the heat, stir in your honey and enjoy!
This is such a warming cozy drink you might even forget for a minute how good it is for you! Besides a regular dose of golden milk, it’s worth doing a little bit of research into inflammatory responses and other anti-inflammatory foods. Here’s a good info-graphic I found from Dr. Axe to get you started. As you know I’m all about food and health education. Oh, and delicious ways to apply that education.
